Michael E. Gray, age 60 of Saunderstown, RI, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 20, 2020. He was the devoted husband of Dr. Nancy (Ryan) Gray for 35 years. Besides his wife, Nancy, he is survived by his three loving sons, Colin M. Gray, Keenan R. Gray, and Kevin M. Gray; his sister, Amanda Trick; and his brother, John Gray. He is also survived by three nieces, Beth Gray, Jessica Gray, and Melissa Trick; and his nephew, David Trick. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania he was a son of the late Clair and Rosemary (Mouck) Gray.
Michael received his Bachelor of Science degree in Polymer Chemistry from the Pennsylvania State University in 1981 and his Master of Science degree in Polymer Chemistry from the same institution in 1983. He worked as a research scientist at B.F. Goodrich Corporation in his early career and relocated to Houston, TX after his marriage to Nancy in 1985. He obtained his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston in 1987. From 1987 to 1994, Michael served as Director of Sales and Marketing for Viscotek, Corporation, Houston, TX, and in 1994, founded his own business, Polymer Standards Services, USA, serving as President and CEO. After selling his business in 2011, Michael obtained his teaching certification from Rhode Island College. Michael became a member of the Bishop Hendricken High School faculty in 2012. As a member of the Science faculty, Michael taught Physics, Earth Science, Chemistry, and 8th Grade Science. He especially enjoyed working with 8th graders through the STEM education program. Michael’s genuine care for his students is what set him apart as an inspiring educator and positive role model.
Michael served as a mentor to hundreds of young people through his service as Commissioner for the Narragansett Counsel of the Boy Scouts of America, as moderator of Hendricken’s Board Game Design Club, and as coach for both middle school and high school National Science Olympiad programs. One of his greatest joys was to help found Bishop Hendricken’s Esports program, leading his teams to five straight state titles over the course of two years.
Michael loved his family, his friends, his colleagues and his students, as well as video games and all things related to trains and railroads. He loved Our Lord and was a dedicated and active member of Christ the King Church, where he served as Eucharistic Minister.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be privately celebrated. A live-stream of Mr. Gray’s mass will be available on Friday, June 26, 2020 at 11 am.
